Prey for China?s endangered wild Amur tigers released on Global Tiger Day

Wangqing, China ? Over 30 captive-bred red and sika deer have been released into the wild in Northeast China?s Wangqing Nature Reserve to help repopulate the area with desirable prey, giving the country?s endangered wild Amur tigers plenty to celebrate on Global Tiger Day.

The release is part of a tiger recovery trial project run by WWF, the Jilin Provincial Forestry Department and the Wangqing Forestry Bureau and represents a crucial first step in providing the living conditions Amur tigers need to thrive in the reserve?s rugged Changbaishan area.?

?There is very little prey for the 20 Amur tigers now living in Changbaishan, and this limits their numbers in China. Increasing the breeding population of the prey will help attract more Amur Tigers in the long run,? said Fan Zhiyong, Director of WWF China?s species programme.??

One tiger needs to eat the equivalent of a medium size deer every week to survive and without adequate food, the tiger population rapidly declines. Many of Asia?s forests are already considered ?empty?, with many trees but few animals.

Fifty years of decline

Over the past fifty years, the population of wild Amur tigers in Northeast China has declined from an estimated 200 to 20 today, due to massive pressure from deforestation, economic development, and poaching.

There are an estimated 450 Amur tigers now living in the Russian Far East, but recent sightings show that the population is slowly moving across the Chinese border and into the country?s Wandashan and Changbaishan mountains, part of the Wangqing Nature Reserve.

However, a recent WWF-backed survey shows that the lack of prey is a major hurdle in supporting the settlement of tigers in Northeast China. The same survey shows that the number of ungulate animals in the Changbaishan area - especially favored prey such as red deer and sika deer - is too low to support the recovery of the Amur tiger population.

?Density of red deer and wild boar, for example, is only 0.3 per square kilometer, less than half the number in neighboring Russia. The low prey density in China means it would be extremely difficult for the area?s forests to support the recovery of the tiger population,? said Dr. Zhu Jiang, Head of WWF China?s Northeast Office.?

?Part of the solution is to increase the stock of available prey. We?re also working on habitat restoration, and stepping up monitoring to stop poaching,? noted Dr. Zhu. ?This initial trial will help create the conditions needed to support the survival of at least one female tiger within the Wangqing Nature Reserve.?

15 magical pieces of tech that need to stop

5 hrs.

They were supposed to make everything better. And maybe they did, a little. But it's time for them to go away now. Sorry, QR codes. It's been real.?

?1. QR Codes

Imagine a hyperlink, except instead of actual readable text that you can type in, it's some weird ziggurat that gives no hint of where it's going. Also, instead of clicking on it, you have to take a picture of it with your camera, and you're probably going to have to take that picture three or four times before it works, and a lot of the time it's going to send you to either a non-mobile site or a dead link. If they all disappeared tomorrow, not one person in the entire world would care, not at all.

2. Routers

For some reason, they all look like they were made in 1995 and most of them act that way too. Everything they do would be much better in a scaled down, Airport-Express-style dongle. Time to burn this one down and start again.

3. Browser plugins

Flash is pulling out of the mobile world (after years of trying to break in) and Silverlight is ruining lives on a daily basis. Soon HTML5 will replace them entirely ? browser plugins don't exist on the iPhone or iPad and they won't exist on Windows 8 RT ?? but in the meantime there are a lot of websites with gaping holes in them, like a newspaper attacked by old lady clipping coupons.

4. Traffic cameras

The?rule was, if a cop caught you speeding, you got a ticket. It was a great system, both for the Smokey-and-the-Bandit factor and because, if you were only a little bit over the line, the officer would usually let it slide. Mailing tickets to people just because they got from point A to point B a little ahead of the curve is cheating, and it moves us towards a creepy automotive panopticon where the force of law is both intangible and omnipresent. But mostly, it's just lame.

5. Inductive charging?

Another idea that's been kicking around for a while without ever taking off. If it's not built into the phone, like the Palm Pre, it's not any easier than plugging it in.

6. Bluetooth audio

This started out as a good idea ? especially the speakers ? but it took 15 years to produce a decent product. Time to call it a day. We're better off with speaker wire.

7. The remote control

True story: I recently visited a friend who was housesitting, and it took us 10 minutes to figure out how to turn on the TV. There were three remotes, and each one had 40 buttons on it, except for the Apple TV remote, which didn't have a power button. Just put it in an app.

8. The cable box?

Speaking of which, here's a strange box that requires another remote control. Destroy! Or get it over with and shove it inside of an?Xbox or Apple TV already.

9. Software license keys?

Hard to enter, easy to crack. Authentication shouldn't be this difficult.

10. Cables For everything

Too many cables. Toomanycables. Too many, cables. Too.?Many cables.

11. The printer/scanner/fax

A surprising number of people still get one of these when they buy a computer, even though there's no reason to do any of these three things, and if you ever run out of ink or toner you will suffer the tortures of the damned. The sooner we stop expecting paper copies of things, the better.

12. Blu-Ray?

A lot of loose copies of Transformers 3 were handed out trying to make this one happen. And the movie looked great! Unfortunately, nobody you know owns a Blu-Ray player, and nobody wants to make a computer that deals with them. You're better off streaming.

13. The power brick

It's enough to make you wish we'd stuck with direct current.

14. Facebook comments

Designed to bring civility to web comments by attaching real people's names to them. Because if you know Richard Morris here is the person saying crazy things, he won't say them, right? Wrong. It continues to be a bottomless will of spiritual death and plain-old web-design misery.

15. Standalone anti-virus software?

It's crazy that this still exists. Just bake it into the OS already.

"Hobbit" movie adaptation to be a trilogy

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Peter Jackson's film adaptation of "The Hobbit" will be split into three movies, the director and the studios behind the venture said on Monday.

Jackson said that given the richness of the story -- which is set 60 years before "The Lord of The Rings" -- he decided after wrapping up shooting recently in New Zealand that what was originally planned as two movies would now be a trilogy.

"I'm delighted that New Line, MGM and Warner Bros. are equally enthusiastic about bringing fans this expansive tale across three films," Jackson said in a statement.

"It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, 'a tale that grew in the telling'," Jackson said in a statement on his Facebook site.

"The Hobbit," written by J.R.R. Tolkien, is the prequel to the British author's epic fantasy "The Lord of the Rings," which Jackson made into three Oscar-winning films about 10 years ago.

A spokesman for New Line said the third "Hobbit" film would be released in the summer of 2014. The first two "Hobbit" movies, starring British actor Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, have already been announced for release in December 2012 and December 2013.

"It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made," Jackson said on his Facebook page.

"We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance," he added.

Protect Your Business from Social Network-Related Security Threats ...

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) February 11, 2010

There is no doubt social networking is here to stay. But according to a new study from Sophos, what started out as just another concern for wasted time has now turned into a full-fledged security threat to businesses.

The study conducted in December 2009 showed a ?70% rise in the proportion of firms that report encountering spam and malware attacks via social networks during 2009.? Over half the companies in the survey said they had received spam via social networking sites; over a third report having received malware.

Numbers like these are the reason why over 72% of companies feel their businesses are at risk when employees are active on social networking sites. And when asked what they feel the biggest threat of the social networking world is, companies responded ?Facebook? loud and clear, giving it 60% of the threat pie.

?Americans of all ages have embraced social networking,? says Pandora Corp. co-founder James Leasure. ?But accessing those websites from the office can open the door for internet-related security threats.?

But spyware and malware aren?t the only threats at hand; data leaks can destroy a company. Criminals have taken note of the public?s infatuation with social networking and are using it to harvest sensitive corporate and personal information. In 2009, companies and institutions of all sizes and types reported data leaks.

?Businesses are struggling to find a way to create a positive atmosphere in the office,? explains Leasure. ?For most, that translates into the freedom to check and update social networking pages at work. But companies need a way to protect themselves from security threats that sites like MySpace and Facebook pose.?

The outright blocking of social networking websites is impractical for many of today?s companies, as many have embraced Web 2.0 technology to help market and advertise their products and services. Thus, companies also need a way to prevent cyberslacking, while making sure access is available to those who need it.

?This quandary is just one of the many important reasons we created The Office Software,? states Leasure.

The Office Software is a multi-functional office productivity tool designed to help managers of small and medium-sized business achieve increased productivity and enhanced security. The program allows managers to analyze activities performed by employees by tracking computer usage at a group and/or an individual level, cross-reference activities reported by an employee, and access an employee?s desktop in real-time. TheOS also has the ability to block websites and mark others as ?timewasters? to help manage time spent on non-work-related websites like Facebook and MySpace.

?Managers and business owners need to be able to see how their employees are using company machines,? says Leasure. ?If there is a major data leak or a simple virus infection, being able to trace the source can be invaluable in rectifying the situation. The Office Software is specifically optimized for multiple-user environments where traditional monitoring software like our own PC Pandora might not be the perfect solution.?

When it comes to data leaks, companies need to be especially cautious about their intellectual property, the lifeblood of a company. This could be in the form of sensitive customer data or company secrets. According to a 2007 survey by the Enterprise Strategy Group, 32% of companies surveyed reported losing intellectual property within the 12 months prior to the survey. Add that statistic to the fact that 80% of computer-related crime related to businesses is performed by ?insiders,? and it?s very easy to see why monitoring employee activity is essential in the interest of security.

?Imagine what could happen if a disgruntled or terminated employee sent your customer data, client lists, mailing lists, project timelines or other valuable property to a competitor,? says Leasure. ?The Office Software gives you a step up and provides you with the knowledge you need to stop a leak before it gets serious.?

While social networking has become a part of most everyone?s daily lives, it can indeed have negative effects on companies. From employee productivity to breaches of security, employers need an effective solution to allow their employees a certain freedom on the Internet, while keeping threats at bay and cyberslacking to a minimum.

?When you use a program like The Office Software,? Leasure concludes, ?you?ll be able to eliminate cyberslacking and protect your company?s assets at the same time.?

For more information on The Office Software and to learn how it works, visit http://www.theofficesoftware.com

System Requirements: The Office Software requires Windows Vista, Windows XP or above; Microsoft .NET 2.0 framework (available with theOS installer). an Intel or AMD processor running at 1GHz or faster (dual core recommended for Dashboard); 512M RAM for Agent, 1GB RAM for Dashboard; 40MB of HDD space for the installation; 10M ? 15M of hard disk space for a typical day of recording; an Internet Connection (dial-up modem, cable modem or DSL) for program registration; Administrative or Power User access rights to install the software. Agent (employee) computers require a LAN connection to the Manager computer.

About Pandora Corp.: Formed in 2005, Pandora Corporation has one goal ? to help our customers monitor, control and protect their families, their businesses and themselves online. Pandora Corporation?s flagship PC Pandora monitoring software is an essential tool that helps parents keep their children safe from predators and cyberbullies, while shielding them from potentially harmful or mature content. Pandora Recovery is a free data recovery tool that allows users to recovery lost and deleted files from NTFS and FAT-formatted drives. The newest product, The Office Software (theOS), allows employers to monitor employee computer and internet activity, thereby increasing productivity and protecting company assets.

pest control Islington, Islington pest - Get Rid of Rats through Pest ...

Why Is Controlling Rats Important?

Rats leave bacteria that can cause diseases such as the deadly Leptospirosis, typhus fever, and rat-bite fever. Rats transmit disease through numerous ways: their hair, their droppings and their urine. If food or water that has been contaminated is consumed, it could also cause food poisoning.

Moreover, if you own a rental property or a business establishment, the sight of rat would most likely drive your potential and existing customers away. Thus, for a business, controlling or totally eliminating these pests from your building is of utmost importance.

Other than that, rats are quite destructive in many ways. They not only dig holes or create holes in your walls or cabinets, but their droppings and urine can also affect the air quality inside your home.

With all these hazards that such rodents can cause, it is indeed very important not to take them for granted. If you see rats running inside your home or you start seeing signs of existence of rats, doing pest control methods to get rid of rats immediately will definitely save you from all possible dangers it can cause later on. The good news is that if you live in Islington and nearby areas in the UK, there are reputable and experienced pest control Islington companies you can turn to in solving this problem. Through a comprehensive and efficient pest control service, you can easily get rid of rats from your home. Most importantly, you do not have to worry about decomposing rats that create a strong unpleasant odor, as most pest control companies can take care of this thing for you.

When Is the Best Time to Contact an Islington Pest control Islington?

You will probably need more professional help in late summer or early autumn, which is the breeding time of rats. However, if you see signs of rats' presence in your house or building, you can always contact a pest control company for help. This is most especially important if you see them running around during the day. Because rats are mostly active at night, seeing them running in your home during the day is a strong indication that they are plenty of them.

Why Should You Not Exterminate Rats Yourself?

Exterminating rats is a tough and messy job. Using of traps, for instance, only usually get the rats by the neck. So doing the job yourself also means not only trapping them but also dealing with the dead rats and disposing them properly. If you don't do it properly, you might even contact bacteria that can cause diseases.

Moreover, these traps are only good if you only have one or two rats running around. But if there are plenty of rats inside your house, the mechanical methods of getting rid of rats might not work well and you might need more advanced methods, such as using of chemical sprays that only licensed pest control companies have access to.

If you start seeing signs of rats in your home or business, seek professional help from a reliable pest control Islington company immediately. A good Islington pest control firm knows various methods on how to kill rats and prevent them from coming back.

White House lowers its growth forecasts for 2012, 2013

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House cut its outlook for U.S. growth in 2012 and 2013 on Friday, hours after data showed the economy grew at a tepid pace in the second quarter, raising concerns about a slowdown that could mar President Barack Obama's re-election chances.

In its semi-annual budget review, the White House said it expected gross domestic product to rise 2.3 percent this year and 2.7 percent again next year - less than the 2.7 percent and 3.0 percent growth projections it made in February.

"The economy continues to face serious headwinds that have dampened growth and limited gains in employment," the mid-session report on Obama's fiscal 2013 budget proposal stated.

It also widened its estimate for the federal deficit in fiscal 2013 - which begins October 1 - to $991 billion from the original $901 billion made in February, and said the budget gap for fiscal 2012 would be $1.211 trillion, slimmer than the original $1.327 trillion.

Over a 10-year window, from fiscal 2013 through 2021, it said deficits would be $240 billion lower than projected.

As has become customary in a politically divided Washington, Obama's 2013 budget proposal was rejected in Congress, where Republicans are opposed to raising taxes and Obama's Democrats want to collect more revenue alongside any spending cuts. The Republicans control the House of Representatives and Obama's fellow Democrats control the Senate.

An agreement struck last August to avert a sovereign default set spending levels for this year. Another fight is brewing over tax hikes and spending cuts slated for the end of 2012, a convergence of timing referred to as the "fiscal cliff."

Next week, the House is expected to vote against an Obama proposal to raise taxes on families making more than $250,000 a year. The Senate had backed the plan, which would extend tax rates begun under Republican former President George W. Bush for middle-class families for another year.

"If the president is serious about helping rebuild this economy, he will work with Republicans to stop these tax hikes and reform the tax code to create a better environment for private-sector job creation," House Speaker John Boehner, the top Republican in Congress, said in a statement on Friday.

Earlier on Friday, the Commerce Department said U.S. gross domestic product expanded at a 1.5 percent annual rate between April and June, the weakest pace of growth since the third quarter of 2011.

The budget was a searing political issue last summer, when a standoff between Democrats and Republicans over deficits and taxes brought the country to the edge of sovereign default and led to a credit rating downgrade.

Friday's weak second-quarter growth figure and continued concerns about U.S. unemployment are major political worries for Obama's campaign ahead of the November 6 election, which depends on a sense that the economy is improving.

A CBS/New York Times poll published last week showed 39 percent of respondents approved of Obama's economic leadership while 55 percent disapproved. That represented a change from April, when 44 percent approved of the presidents' economic stewardship while 48 percent disapproved.

Paris Jackson tweets, 'Grandma's here'

By Courtney Hazlett

One chapter of the bizarre and increasingly complicated Jackson family saga has come to a close: family matriarch Katherine Jackson? has returned home, according to Michael Jackson's daughter Paris. "Grandma's here! #thankyougod <33," Paris tweeted in the?early hours of Thursday morning.

Paris, 14, reported her grandmother missing July 21 amid a dispute over late singer Michael Jackson's estate. Katherine was later found safe and sound in Arizona, but that didn't keep Paris from tweeting concern about her grandmother, who at the time was the appointed guardian for Paris and her brothers Prince, 15, and Blanket, 10.

On July 23 Paris tweeted, "8 days and counting. something is really off, this isn't like her at all... I wanna talk directly to my grandmother!!" Just hours before Katherine's apparent return, here whereabouts appeared to still be in question, with Paris tweeting, "they promised my grandmother would be home YESTERDAY. Why isn't she home?"

Because of Katherine's?multi-day absence, a judge on Wednesday temporarily removed her guardianship of Paris, Prince and Blanket and named Katherine's grandson Tito Joe "TJ" Jackson temporary caretaker of the children. Katherine told ABC News that the court ruling was "based on a bunch of lies."

theGrio: Who is TJ Jackson?

"I am devastated that while I've been away, that my children, my grandchildren, have been taken away from me, and I'm coming home to see about that, also," she said Wednesday,?reading from a prepared statement. "I am here today to let everybody know that I am fine and I am here with my children, and my children would never do a thing to me like that, holding me against my will," she said while her children Randy, Janet and Rebbie were seated next to her. "It's very stupid for people to think that."

Next, attorneys for Katherine Jackson are expected to ask the court to reinstate her as guardian. Separate from the guardianship issue, some Jackson family members continue to dispute the validity of Michael's will. Randy Jackson on Tuesday's episode of Al Sharpton's "PoliticsNation" on MSNBC said he believes the will is fake, and the executors engaged in criminal activity.

A person should remember the one thing that excess nutrition supplement is harmful with the health so these nutrition supplements ought to be taken with the precision and to fulfill the requirement of body nutrients.

When considering pet grooming choices, one must decide which pet groomer is going to be best. There are many dog groomers on the market, but very few kitten groomers. If you have a cat it is best to look carefully at exactly what specific facilities offer kitty grooming expertise. Cats are finicky animals and they could be very hard to future husband, putting the groomer at an increased risk for bites or scratches. Choosing a professional cat groomer is really an important decision the dog owner must make to ensure the health and happiness of these cat. As with all animals a negative pet groomer can help to make mistakes and unintentionally hurt youngster destroying confidence in doing the cat emotionally distraught.

Cat pet grooming is usually a difficult job and a small number people are up towards task. Some of the best dog groomers usually groom cats simply because of the danger to both themselves plus the animal. Most cats do nothing like water and bathing them is usually an adventure as both feline and human fight intended for dominance. Most cats become mentally distraught when immersed with water, and it takes a new experience pet groomer in order to calm the cat and while doing so protect both parties required.

A pulsar with a tremendous hiccup

Friday, July 27, 2012

Pulsars are superlative cosmic beacons. These compact neutron stars rotate about their axes many times per second, emitting radio waves and gamma radiation into space. Using ingenious data analysis methods, researchers from the Max Planck Institutes for Gravitational Physics and for Radio Astronomy, in an international collaboration, dug a very special gamma-ray pulsar out of data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The pulsar J1838-0537 is radio-quiet, very young, and, during the observation period, experienced the strongest rotation glitch ever observed for a gamma-ray-only pulsar.

Pure gamma-ray pulsars are difficult to identify because their characteristics, such as its sky position, the period of rotation and its change in time, are unknown. And astronomers can only determine their approximate position in the sky from the original Fermi observations. They must therefore check many combinations of these characteristics in a blind search, which requires a great deal of computing time. This is the only way of finding a hidden periodicity in the arrival times of the gamma-ray photons.

Even high-performance computers quickly reach their limit in this process. Therefore, the researchers used algorithms originally developed for the analysis of gravitational-wave data to conduct a particularly efficient hunt through the Fermi data. "By employing new optimal algorithms on our ATLAS computer cluster, we were able to identify many previously-missed signals," says Bruce Allen, Director of the AEI. Back in November 2011, Allen's team announced the discovery of nine new Fermi gamma-ray pulsars, which had escaped all previous searches. Now the scientists have made a new extraordinary find with the same methods.

The name of the newly discovered pulsar ? J1838-0537 ? comes from its celestial coordinates. "The pulsar is, at 5,000 years of age, very young. It rotates about its own axis roughly seven times per second and its position in the sky is towards the Scutum constellation," says Holger Pletsch, a scientist in Allen's group and lead author of the study which has now been published. "After the discovery we were very surprised that the pulsar was initially only visible until September 2009. Then it seemed to suddenly disappear."

Only a complex follow-up analysis enabled an international team led by Pletsch to solve the mystery of pulsar J1838-0537: it did not disappear, but experienced a sudden glitch after which it rotated 38 millionths of a Hertz faster than before. "This difference may appear negligibly small, but it's the largest glitch ever measured for a pure gamma-ray pulsar," explains Allen. And this behaviour has consequences.

"If the sudden frequency change is neglected, then after only eight hours, a complete rotation of the pulsar is lost in our counting, and we can no longer determine at which rotational phase the gamma-ray photons reach the detector aboard Fermi," adds Pletsch. The "flashing" of the neutron star then disappears. If the researchers take the glitch into account and correct the change in rotation, the pulsar shows up again in the observational data.

The precise cause of the glitches observed in many young pulsars is unknown. Astronomers consider "star quakes" of the neutron star crust or interactions between the superfluid stellar interior and the crust to be possible explanations. "Detecting a large number of strong pulsar glitches makes it possible to learn more about the inner structure of these compact celestial bodies," says Lucas Guillemot from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, the second author of the study. "This is a good example of the collaboration of two Max Planck institutes with complementary research foci," says Michael Kramer, Director and Head of the Fundamental Physics in Radio Astronomy research group.

After the discovery in data from the Fermi satellite, the researchers pointed the radio telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia/USA at the celestial position of the gamma-ray pulsar. In an observation of almost two hours and by analysing a further, older, one-hour observation of the source they found no indications of pulsations in the radio range, indicating that J1838-0537 is a rare gamma-ray-only pulsar.

There were, however, noticeable overlays with observations of the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in Namibia, which searches for very-high-energy gamma radiation from the depths of space. In a survey with H.E.S.S., astronomers found an extended source of this radiation near the now discovered pulsar, but have not yet been able to clarify its nature.

The discovery of the pulsar suggests that the H.E.S.S. source is a pulsar wind nebula. These are produced by particles moving at almost the speed of light, which the pulsar accelerates in its extremely strong magnetic field. Since the exact position of the pulsar is now known, H.E.S.S. can take this into account in the future and to make more precise measurements than before in this celestial region.

The ATLAS computer cluster of the Albert Einstein Institute has thus already assisted in the discovery of the tenth previously unknown gamma-ray pulsar; however, Allen's team has meanwhile mobilised further computing capacity. "Since August 2011, our search has also been running on the distributed computing project Einstein@Home, which has computing power a factor of ten greater than the ATLAS cluster. We are very optimistic about finding more unusual gamma-ray pulsars in the Fermi data," says Bruce Allen. One goal of the expanded search is to discover the first gamma-ray-only pulsar with a rotation period in the millisecond range.

The Crossed Pond ? Immigrant-Friendly Cities

Posted by Brad @ 4:38 pm on July 25th 2012

While Arizona has gotten all the headlines, a number of other American locations ? mostly rust-belt cities ? have flung open their doors. Dayton, OH, Detroit, MI, and Chicago, IL, have notably explicitly invited immigrants, without particular concern for their legality. But the real welcome mat may have been laid out by Baltimore, MD, and its mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

In March, Rawlings-Blake signed an order prohibiting police and social agencies from asking anyone about immigration status. The order also says no city funds, resources, or personnel shall be used to investigate or arrest people solely for a civil violation of federal immigration law. And it asks U.S. immigration agents to tell people they arrest that they are from the federal government, not the city.

Incidentally, I love Baltimore. Great city ? I go there quite a bit.

But more to the point, I love this. I am, in most cases, a rule of law guy, but frankly our immigration laws are so f-ed up ? and so conducive to NOT coming in legally ? and our demagoguery is so revolting, that I find myself much more on Baltimore?s side than Arizona?s. Immigrants, including illegal immigrants, are so overwhelmingly good for the country that I don?t even know that it particularly merits a debate. For every politician in America, every immigration debate seems to start with ?you have to secure the border first?. I take a different tack. I think every immigration debate has to start with ?you have to drastically and immediately expand legal immigration opportunities?, and the first hint that most immigration debates do not revolve around law and order but in fact revolve around just plain old fashioned dislike of immigrants is that virtually nobody influential even broaches that topic.

Anyway, good for Baltimore.

In This World, A Software Engineer Gets Paid - Business Insider

VMware's $1.26 billion acquisition of tiny startup Nicira was as much about grabbing talent as grabbing? technology, Valley insiders say.

VMware has been the target of much raiding because the timing is right. The company went public about five years ago. Early employees have likely fully vested their shares.

So says Jedidiah Yueh, CEO of Menlo Park-based Delphix. (He has a history with VMware's majority share owner, EMC, who acquired his previous startup Avamar in 2006 for $165 million. He stayed at EMC for about a year.)

His current startup?Delphix is now at 100 people, many of them from VMware, he says, including VMware's former vice president of product management, Karthik Rau.

"[Why did] VMware buy a company with under $10 million in revenue for over a billion dollars? It's a talent problem," says Yueh.

There is a major and "vicious recruiting" war going on in the Valley, says Big Switch cofounder Kyle Forster. Big Switch now has 44 employees and is hiring as fast is it can. But it hasn't been easy.?

Forster?says he turned down six of Cisco's distinguished engineers interested in working for him because they only knew hardware. A DE is the highest technical honor a Cisco employee can earn. When?Forster found a DE that also knew VMware, not only did he hire the guy, but the company is "paying him more than we pay the CEO." (Big Switch's CEO is cofounder Guido Appenzeller.)

Meanwhile, Insieme, a Cisco-backed startup,?has been raiding Nicira, VMware, and other companies for talent, too, and offering insane amounts of money?reportedly up to $2 million as an eventual payoff.

Why don't they hire from within Cisco? They do, but they are also in desperate need of software engineers. Insieme?is run by an engineering team well-known to Cisco: Mario Mazzola, Prem Jain and Luca Cafiero. Cisco has backed them before with what's called a "spin-in" strategy, where Cisco has an option to buy the company but employees can earn startup-like paydays.

This team was responsible for Cisco's super successful server product, UCS, and its next-generation Nexus switches from a previous spin-in called Nuova Systems. But Nuova had a secret weapon: VMware cofounder Ed Bugnion. Bugnion was the guy that knew software, while the Mazzola, Jain, and Cafiero knew hardware. Bugnion left Cisco to get his PhD at Stanford about a year ago and a source close to him says he's got no plans to join Insieme.

People Born In Fall More Likely To Live To 100 - The ElderCare Law ...

After comparing data on 1,574 centenarians born in the United States between 1880 and 1895 with that of their shorter-lived siblings and spouses, researchers from the University of Chicago determined that people born in the fall are significantly more likely to live to be 100 years of age than those born between March and August. The study, published in the Journal of Aging Research, found people born in September, October, and November had longer life spans. Though the researchers couldn?t determine the exact reason for the difference, environmental temperature during birth, seasonal infections and disease, and the nutritional status of the mother during pregnancy were among the theories offered to explain the effects of birth month on longevity. More here and here.

Afghan police commander leads defection to Taliban

By NBC News' Akbar Shinwari and Amna Nawaz

KABUL -- More than a dozen members of Afghanistan's national police defected and joined the Taliban in the last few days, Afghan officials told NBC News on Tuesday.?

A police commander in the Shewain area of Farah -- a western province bordering Iran -- led 13 junior?Afghan National Police (ANP) members under his command in a mass defection on Saturday night, taking with them weapons and two Humvees, an official told NBC News.

According to another official in Farah, the commander had been with the ANP for two-and-a-half years, and had poisoned seven other policemen who refused to defect with him. Those seven survived.

It was not the first defection from ANP ranks, although it was among the largest to be reported.

In February 2010, a group of two dozen police officers reportedly?left their posts in Wardak province to join the Taliban, taking with them weapons and trucks, The New York Times reported. ?

A Taliban spokesman later claimed the officers had surrendered to them, the newspaper reported.

Several smaller-scale defections have been reported across the country in recent years.

According to NATO figures, there were 149,642 ANP members serving in various roles across Afghanistan as of April 2012. New members are being trained with a goal of reaching a target strength of 157,000 by October 2012, as NATO troops prepare to withdraw from the country in 2014.?

Marissa Mayer and demystifying CEO pregnancies

Soon after Steven R. Appleton, the CEO of Micron, died in a single-engine plane crash this past spring, there was some impolitic grumbling. Should top executives have to disclose risky pastimes like amateur aviation? Don?t shareholders deserve to know when they?re staking their trust?and 747-sized salaries?in people who harbor the curious ?urge to fly their own planes,? as Jacob Weisberg once described the dangerous brain condition that?s almost epidemic in some superrich quarters?

Maybe. After all, CEOs are said to be indispensable. That?s how they amass their nine figures. Their bodies become, in some sense, the corporate body. Donald Trump?s company is tied to his pompous comportment and gilded hair. The same is true for Ted Turner?s robust outdoorsiness or Richard Branson?s ambitious athleticism. Shareholders may be within their right to know if that body is in a precarious position.

After initially dissembling, Steve Jobs in 2004 finally disclosed to Apple employees that he was seriously sick with a pancreatic tumor. As he grew thinner and frailer, observers speculated about his health and took the measure of his contributions to his company. This process ended up being essential to setting up the orderly succession that has kept Apple running smoothly since his death.

But a metastatic tumor?or a JFK Jr. flight hobby?can kill a person. It seems reasonable to demand transparency about the insurability of a CEO. However, reasonableness on this subject points to absurdity in a more recent, piquant case: Namely, the suggestion that companies should disclose a peculiarly female ?health condition,? when announcing female CEOs. That ?health condition?? Pregnancy.

Marissa Mayer, former Google It girl, took charge of Yahoo last week. Three hours after the Yahoo press release went out, the 37-year-old revealed that she was six months pregnant. (I?m assuming the news didn't shock Mayer's Google office mates.) She had mentioned the pregnancy to Yahoo?s board when they came calling, and they didn?t mind. But, is her ?delicate condition? really shareholder-worthy information?

Pregnancy, lest anyone still wonders, is actually not an illness. It?s a sign of health, and a significant contributor to it. But that?s not really the point. No one?even scolding observers like Francine McKenna in Forbes?really believes that pregnancy in a healthy woman, even one over 35, poses risks to the mother. And under SEC rules, companies don?t have to disclose an employee?s pregnancy except under certain kinds of investigations.

But the truth is that corporate America, as well as political America, which is to say America, has long been awed by women?s bodies and frightened by their effects on the workplace. Consider the cases?well outside of the Kingdom of Saud?where women?s bodies at the office are described as ?distracting? or otherwise a hindrance to productivity. And that?s usually secretaries and interns. It should be no surprise that people are unhinged at the thought of the corporation depending on the inner workings of a woman?s mind and body in the top job.

What if they get um those weird headaches? Or their periods? Or just have those strange ?fallopian tubes??a phrase a male friend of mine uses to stand in for everything unfathomable about women?s physical existence?

Anyone who can remember the straight-faced concerns in the 1980s over what progesterone fluctuations might do to geopolitics were a woman to become president knows that this?no matter how coeducated most of us are?is a Mars-Venus issue. It?s obvious but I?ll say it anyway: Never, officially never, has a man newly in a job been evaluated in light of the mysteries of male moods and desires and afflictions and neuroses, and their connections to androgens and anatomy.

For a time, in movies, obstetrical issues seemed to confer magical powers on working women. Fran McDormand?s awesomely pregnant Marge Gunderson in ?Fargo? comes to mind. Marge?s detective brilliance, we came to understand, was a function of the no-nonsense attitude brought on by her pregnancy. The same is true of Regina King as Marcy Tidwell in ?Jerry Maguire?; she speaks the truth because she is too pregnant?impatient and focused?for lies.

(In ?What to Expect When You?re Expecting,? the new comedy based on the harrowing childbirth-prep book, women who are expecting do little but expect. Too bad.)

Sure, having ?women in the workplace? (in the old women?s-lib expression) has to be OK with Americans in the abstract. They?re more than half of the workforce. But women who are actually incarnate in bodies? Real, flesh-and-blood women can still make many flesh-and-blood men squeamish?especially when those with women?s bodies seem too. . .womanly. Like voluptuous. Or pregnant. Or menopausal.

The president and CEO of an august institution in New York tells me that she needs women on her board because the men, during meetings, dissolve in embarrassment when she?s undergoing a routine hot flash. The women, for their part, hand her a bottle of water and get on with business.

Similarly, women with new babies are routinely sighted pumping breast milk in the women?s restrooms of big office buildings. Pumpers typically keep even the non-nude part of the pumping process?the washing of bottles, the sanitizing of tubes or charging of the pump?out of sight of male colleagues. But that?s not because they?re flustered by the practice. In single-sex restrooms, they?re always ready to swap pumping jokes (?porn for robots?). No, they hide it because men are flustered by breast pumps.

And why shouldn?t they be? Breast pumps are deeply strange to people who don?t use them. Just as, say, urinals are strange to the rest of us. (For real, I don?t understand them! How do they flush? Where's the privacy?)

But that doesn?t mean that a CEO who uses a urinal ought to disclose that info to shareholders.

Quick tips for traveling with toddlers | Pocketchange Shopping ...

eddie bauer travel system stroller, purple diaper bag

Both my husband and I are fond of traveling and visiting places. However, after my daughter?s birth, our travels were reduced drastically until she grew a little older. With her getting onto her own footsteps and beginning to eat, we realized we could get back to enjoying our trips once again. All we needed to do was to take care of a few things and enjoy a successful vacationing. If you too want to travel with your toddler, I have jotted down some tips for you to follow:

Before the trip:

  • Pack as many outfits as you can. You can mix and match for convenience. A simple formula would be to pick double the number of outfits as of days. Pack a pair of comfortable footwear that would go with all dresses.
  • Pick an extra bag consisting of toys, a wet washrag, snacks and dry hand towel. You could go for a purple diaper bag since it looks quite hip and goes well with almost everything you choose to wear.
  • Hotels usually provide portable cribs. So call well in advance and make arrangements. This will help both you and your toddler to have a good rest.
  • Carry your Eddie Bauer travel system stroller since it is going to be a big respite for you. Obviously you cannot really carry your child and your child may not be able to cope up walking with you.

On the trip:

  • It is always advantageous to maintain your child?s eating and sleeping routine as much as you did at home.
  • It is a good idea to travel at night. Children usually sleep and you don?t have to struggle much to keep them entertained.
  • Take the toys out little by little. Give them a new thing with every hour instead of letting to play with all of them at the same time. The reason is that toddlers usually get bored quite soon.

PS. Take heart in the fact that generally there is a frustration traveling with toddlers. But the underlying fact is that you are teaching your child how to adjust to your family while showing them a wonderful world full of fun.
