Snoqualmie Real Estate: Move-Up Home Buying Opportunities in ...

This guest piece is by local real estate agent, Tony Gilbert, who originally wrote the article for his real estate website blog, The RealFX Group.? The interesting information highlights statistics currently seen in the Snoqualmie real estate market as it recovers from the housing market recession.? Although, Tony uses Snoqualmie Ridge real estate statistics for his article, the information might be useful for other Valley areas.

Currently own a smaller home at Snoqualmie Ridge and feeling a bit ?squeezed?? Thinking of buying a bigger house? Move-up home buyers have a great opportunity going into 2013 at Snoqualmie Ridge due to the VERY strong demand for homes priced at, or near $400,000, compared to the somewhat weaker demand for homes priced above $500,000.

To demonstrate the move-up opportunity compared to years past, let?s compare the number of sold homes on Snoqualmie Ridge in 2006 and 2012.

snoqualmie-ridge-sales-2006snoqualmie-ridge-sales-2012

Notice the statistics have completely flip-flopped. Affordability and loan qualification standards are among several reasons for this ? but many home buyers are now uncomfortable buying a larger home as in years past, unless they truly need the space. In 2012, it?s clear that the majority of home buyers in Snoqualmie Ridge were looking for homes priced at, or below $500,000, and this will likely continue into 2013. We do expect to see continued improvement in higher price brackets, but the rate of increase will obviously be slower.

By Comparison, Lower Priced Homes Often Sell at a Premium

I had a conversation today with a friend of mine who is a resident of Snoqualmie Ridge. She indicated their family would like to move into a larger home sometime in 2013. They own a smaller home in excellent condition which presently fits into a $375K ? $400K price range. With demand being exceptionally strong in that price range, they are in a prime position to both sell their current home at a potential premium (compared to other price ranges), and ?move-up? by buying a pre-owned home of $500K or greater at a potential ?discount? by comparison, since the pace of the market is clearly slower in the higher price brackets.

More Affordable Home Inventory Needed

Home buyers are looking on Snoqualmie Ridge in impressive numbers ? and they?re especially attracted to more affordable new construction. But, this is partly due to thelack of affordable resale homes for sale on The Ridge in a comparable price range ? roughly between $400,000 ? $475,000. For several months, new home builders have been filling the demand in this price range ? and building activity is picking-up steam as I write this. However, when a pre-owned home comes up for sale under $450,000, if it?s priced according to recent market activity, there should be strong buyer interest.

Margins for Negotiation Will Decrease in 2013-2014

All buyers looking for homes over $500K will find more homes to choose from, and likely a wider margin for negotiation. However, as more move-up buyers return to the market in 2013 and beyond, homes in the upper price ranges will also likely begin to enjoy increasing values. Accordingly, the window of opportunity for buyers to get the elusive ?good deal? is definitely shrinking.

Progress reported in quest to create objective method of detecting pain

Dec. 17, 2012 ? A method of analyzing brain structure using advanced computer algorithms accurately predicted 76 percent of the time whether a patient had lower back pain in a new study by researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine.

The study, published online Dec. 17 in Cerebral Cortex, reported that using these algorithms to read brain scans may be an early step toward providing an objective method for diagnosing chronic pain.

"People have been looking for an objective pain detector -- a 'pain scanner' -- for a long time," said Sean Mackey, MD, PhD, chief of the Division of Pain Medicine and professor of anesthesiology, pain and perioperative medicine, and of neurosciences and neurology. "We're still a long way from that, but this method may someday augment self-reporting as the primary way of determining whether a patient is in chronic pain."

The need for a better way to objectively measure pain instead of relying solely on self-reporting has long been acknowledged. But the highly subjective nature of pain has made this an elusive goal. Advances in neuroimaging techniques have initiated a debate over whether this may be possible. Such a tool would be particularly useful in treating very young or very old patients or others who have difficulty communicating, Mackey said.

In a study published last year in PLoS ONE, Mackey and colleagues used computer algorithms to analyze magnetic resonance imaging scans of the brain to accurately measure thermal pain in research subjects 81 percent of the time. But the question remained whether this could be a successful method for measuring chronic pain.

The goal of the new study was to accurately identify patients with lower back pain vs. healthy individuals on the basis of structural changes to the brain, and also to investigate possible pathological differences across the brain.

Researchers conducted MRI scans of 47 subjects who had lower back pain and 47 healthy subjects. Both groups were screened for medication use and mood disorders. The average age was 37.

The idea was to "train" a linear support vector machine -- a computer algorithm invented in 1995 -- on one set of individuals, and then use that computer model to accurately read the brain scans and classify pain in a completely new set of individuals.

The method successfully predicted the patients with lower back pain 76 percent of the time.

"Lower back pain is the most common chronic condition we deal with," Mackey said. "In many cases, we don't understand the cause. What we have learned is that the problem may not be in the back, but in the amplification coming from the back to the brain and nervous system. In this study, we did identify brain regions we think are playing a role in this phenomena."

An estimated 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, and chronic low back pain, in particular, is the most common cause for activity limitation in those younger than 45, according to the study. The prevalence of lower back pain among the U.S. population has also risen significantly, from 3.9 percent in 1992 to 10.2 percent in 2006.

"Previous studies have shown that there are functional changes in the brain of a chronic pain patient, and we show that structural changes may be used to differentiate between those with chronic lower back pain and those without," said former research assistant Hoameng Ung, the first author of the study who is now an MD/PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. "This observation also suggests a role of the central nervous system in chronic pain, and that some types of chronic low back pain may reflect pathology not within the back, but instead within the brain."

Study results suggested that lower back pain is characterized by a pattern of structural changes in the gray matter, the nervous tissue of the brain, showing indication of disease.

"Our investigation ... suggests that the pathology of lower back pain involves changes in gray matter that are present throughout a distributed system of pain processing and pain-associated areas within the brain," the study stated.

This work was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (DA026092, DA029262, DA023609), an International Association for the Study of Pain collaborative research grant and the Redlich Pain Research Endowment.

Instagram lays framework for monetization, sharing info with Facebook in ToS update

Facebook and Instagram will be able to get a bit cozier under that new shared roof beginning early next year. On January 16th, the photo sharing site's new Terms of Service will go into effect, enabling the network to share information, content and usage stats with "businesses that are legally part of the same group of companies that Instagram is part of, or that become part of the same group." In a blog post, Instagram reps outlined the benefits of the revision, explaining that the site will be able to "fight spam more effectively, detect system and reliability problems more quickly, and build better features for everyone by understanding how Instagram is used."

Additionally, in the full ToS, the second item under Rights states "you agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you." In short, Instagram has the right to share content that's already public with advertisers in order to generate revenue. If you're an Instagram user and you care about your rights while using the service, you'll be best served by making your way over to our source links below.

New Orleans tries reform of pretrial detention and bail

After instituting new services last spring to help judges know more about the risk with each defendant, the number of inmates awaiting trial dropped by an average of 165 a day ? an annual rate of savings to the city of $1.4 million. But, the program is now in danger of budget cuts.

By Katy Reckdahl,?Contributor / December 16, 2012

Bail bonds services are crowded around the streets near the Orleans Parish Criminal District Courthouse. A new pretrial services program there helps judges asses risk in releasing jail inmates because many languish behind bars now because they can't afford quick release through the process of commercial bonds.

Ann Hermes/The Christian Science Monitor

Before hurricane Katrina, the sprawling Orleans Parish Prison complex had 7,524 beds ? on average 6,500 of them occupied each day ? making it the ninth-largest jail in the nation, and far out of proportion to the city's size. But the jail's 12 buildings were heavily damaged by the storm and floodwaters, so it became a prime target of those who believed the entire justice system could be reinvented along with the jail.

In 2010, a task force appointed by Mayor Mitch Landrieu decided that jail size could drive reform and recommended the approval of a smaller facility, with 1,438 beds.

"A smaller jail forces people to innovate," Derwyn Bunton, task force member and then-chief public defender said when the city council approved the jail early last year, concurring with the task force's recommendations that the jail buildings be closed and the new proposed 1,438-bed jail be a stand-alone facility.

The philosophy behind the reforms is to arrest fewer people and to keep fewer prisoners after they are arrested. One problem feeding jail overcrowding is the fact that most jail inmates are there for petty offenses and, though not high safety risks, remain there because they are so impoverished that they cannot afford even the small sums of bail that have been set for them. This clash of due process and public safety is the crux of pretrial reforms being advocated at jails across the country.

But by the time the city broke ground for the jail last year, the city still held roughly 2,400 inmates ? nearly double the new jail capacity when it opens in 2014.

One reform instituted to reduce the jail population included new city cite-and-release ordinances, and orders to limit arrests for traffic warrants and citations rather than arrests on many petty crimes.

But New Orleans also embarked on pretrial release reform aimed at reducing the expensive and unfair detention of inmates who can't afford bail, as other cities have done for jail overcrowding. The new pretrial services program has a staff to help judges make more realistic and speedy bail decisions by gathering information about defendants. They then make assessments of defendants' risk of flight and danger as soon after arrest as possible and before defendants first see a judge. The program also provides supervision of those released on bail ? keeping track of them to ensure they return for their court date. With a grant from the US Department of Justice, the New Orleans pilot program was started last April and run by the Vera Institute of Justice, a nonprofit policy organization.

Within months, the number of inmates awaiting trial dropped by an average of 165 inmates a day ? an annual rate of savings to the city of $1.4 million.

New Orleans Pretrial Services enjoyed initial broad support ? even from the local bail-bond industry, which profits from bail.

Longtime local bondsman Blair Boutte, of Blair's Bail Bonds, recalls consulting with colleagues about the program and the needs of his native city, where poverty is twice the national average. "We came to the conclusion that there may be a need for a pretrial service program that helps low-level of-fenders who may be indigent or [who] because of mental illness or substance-abuse issues cannot get out of jail."

But Mr. Boutte and his colleagues turned against the program during city budget sessions this fall, when the city was asked to begin shouldering $600,000 of the cost of the program, and after Vera administrators announced the program would soon start releasing moderate-risk defendants under supervision.

At a city council hearing last month, bondsmen and supporters packed the chambers. Pretrial service agencies are "a drain," said bondsman Matthew Dennis. "Bail costs you zero."

Supporters argued that the program had already paid for itself. The program saves the city money now, argued Pastor Antoine Barriere of the faith-based Micah Project. But he said at the hearing that the program, which helps free low-income defendants from the system, is also "a moral issue."

Most died at the very start of their young lives, tiny victims taken in a way not fit for anyone regardless of age. Others found their life's work in sheltering little ones, teaching them, caring for them, treating them as their own. After the gunfire ended at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the trail of loss was more than many could bear: 20 students and six adults at the school, the gunman's mother at home, and the gunman himself.

Here are some images from the town that was the scene of the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.

Ideas Of Stand-Up Wrestling ? Recreation and Sports

To be a great wrestler, you have to know the rules of stand-up wrestling. Basically, all of it begins on the feet. You could know the correct positions. You have to be in the perfect situation, so that it is possible for you to to undertake essentially the most efficient and efficient wrestling postures. These are the positions or postures that you simply want with the intention to defeat your opponent. By figuring out these postures, it is possible for you to to anticipate your opponent?s transfer and put together for his attacks.

?On Your Toes?

Strictly talking, being on your feet in wrestling would require you to have your elbows in, chin tucked, knees bent and lead leg forward. You should just be sure you maintain your arms near your body. It will help protect you in opposition to having your opponent grabbing onto your arms and taking control of the fight. All the time keep your arms near your body. Don?t simply allow them to dangle in your sides or your front. You?ll want to have your opponent work for it. Wait to your opponent to increase his arms to be able to grab you. Inadvertently, this can go away him open to your attack. That is if you take the chance to assault him.

?Never Take Your Eyes off Your Opponent?

Rule of the thumb in relation to wrestling: Never Look Down! Do not have a look at the floor. Wherever the top goes, the physique follows. You must also avoid wanting up because this place exposes your throat. Stand-up wrestling requires quick thinking. You need to know tips on how to mess together with your opponent?s head. A good wrestler will seemingly pull his opponent?s head in different directions just so to get a response out of his opponent. Having your head manipulated this manner messes with a wrestler?s focus and stability. This is why it is vital that you?ve a strong neck. That is the place neck workout routines help a lot.

?Saddle Your Opponent Your Weight?

Your opponent is your mule if you end up inside the ring. It?s essential let him carry your weight. If you happen to weight 600 lbs, then saddle him with every pound. Do not forget that wrestling is about ?wrestling management? away from your opponent. It?s good to be in management, so you?ll be capable to hook him. You?ll want to anticipate his moves, so that you?ll know how you can respond. That?s how you win in opposition to your opponent.

Why using an Autoresponder is a Must when you are in the Internet ...

Have you ever thought of who gets your information after you filled up one of those opt-in pages you see online? I did! That was before I learned about Autoresponders.

I think, Autoresponders is one of those God given innovation to whoever came up with this idea. ?One of the many wonders that technology has let us enjoy.

What are Autoresponders?

Your underpaid virtual secretary :) I like that description by the way. But here?s Weebitty?s explanation on what autoresponders are:

?An Autoresponder is an online tool that will Automatically Respond or follow up with people who have expressed an interest in a particular product, program or service.

Everyone at some point in time has subscribed into an Autoresponder to get more information about something or to get something free or to be notified of special offers.

When you subscribe at an Autoresponder, you become a prospect and you are giving that person or company permission to send you emails and they can continue sending you emails until you opt-out or remove yourself from their Autoresponder?.

It is hard to be writing back to each inquiry in your business. So this monster will work for you like crazy. Take care of spamming issues too, so your mail will get to your new contact who will quickly hear from you.

Purposes of Autoresponders

To build a Prospect List. A Prospect list is a result of any number of people who subscribed into an autoresponder. As these customers are still in the process of deciding whether to buy your product of not, you can give them information updates through your follow up mails and hopefully it will help them make up their mind that would result a sale for you.

I hate to admit that it?s hard to build a list and retain people to stay in that list, but its part of the process that?s why it is a continuous cycle to build that list.

Get a conversion. Research has shown that a person needs to be ?exposed? seven times to a certain product before they finally decide to purchase. Your personal website can help, but sending mails to your customer using ?automatic? follow up mails can get the job done way too faster.

This sale comes after your subscriber put their trust in you. That?s why it?s important that you treat your subscribers right. ?Don?t just sell to them all the time ? offer freebies of helpful hints, funny things etc. These people are looking for answers to their inquiries, provide that to them ? FREE!

Is it affordable to maintain an Autoresponder?

It?s only $20 a month. ?If you can afford those pricey hot chocolate from Starbucks, then there is no reason for you not to get an autoresponder. ?I cannot stress this enough that it?s responsible to capture leads which is the lifeblood of our business.

David Wood said that we have to allocate 20% of our income for marketing. ?This is one marketing strategy that should never be missed.

I am with Aweber and if you will go to their site, you would see these features ? Send Email Newsletters, Website Signup forms, Collect and manage Subscribers, Autoresponder Follow up, Performance Tracking and Expert Customer Support. I have tried the latter by calling them one time for some clarifications when I was fairly new to all these internet marketing strategies. I didn?t even tell who I was because the one who picked up my call knew my name and luckily I understood perfectly his English because they are US based, not outsource.

Aweber also provides tons of videos and tutorials to make it easy and painless as you set up account. And once its up, you don?t need to do anything else :) Aweber takes care of everything and will send the autoresponder emails anytime of the day, 7 days a week.

Conclusion

So, that is why internet marketers are successful because they are using autoresponders. There are other autoresponders out there aside from Aweber and some of them are even free. ?But I value my business that?s why I opted for the paid ones.

By the Way?

I?d like to tell you about this business that has an ?automatic? concept of earning. You earn while you sleep and even when you are on vacation. ?Click the picture below and put in your information so I could send in a FREE video that that will tell you what this business is.

Icebergs scoured Florida during Ice Age

During the last ice age, icebergs carved trenches in the ocean floor as far south as Miami, according to research presented here Thursday at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

Based on the sea level at the time, some 20,000 years ago, the chunks of floating ice must have reached at least 320 to 650 feet (100 to 200 meters) tall to reach the seafloor, said Jenna Hill, a professor at Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina. "You had to have had big, huge chunks of ice," Hill told OurAmazingPlanet.

The channels, seen in sonar surveys, run between 30 to 165 feet (10 to 50 m) wide and 6 to 16 feet (2 to 5 m) deep. They are smaller and fewer in number than the hundreds of iceberg scours Hill discovered off the South Carolina coastline in 2006. Hill's latest study found up to 100 marks off northern Florida, and four at the state's southern tip.

The deep grooves are evidence of a cold current running southward along the Florida coastline during the last ice age, sometime since 20,000 years ago, Hill said. Gigantic floods from glacial lakes in the Arctic provide one likely source for the frigid flow. During the last ice age, vast pulses of freshwater ? more than all the water in the Great Lakes combined ? periodically poured into the Atlantic Ocean through the northeastern United States and Canada.

    1. Cavemen outdo modern artists at drawing animals

Paleolithic people living more than 10,000 years ago had a better artistic eye than modern painters and sculptures ? at least when it came to watching how horses and other four-legged animals move.

    4. Planet's deepest spot may hold clues to life

The iceberg scours suggest that these floodwaters flowed south, rather than pooling in the North Atlantic Ocean. The cold current likely deflected the warm Gulf Stream, altering the climate in North America and Europe, Hill said.

Hill initially discovered the scours while conducting high-resolution sonar surveys for geologic studies of submarine gas blowouts along the East Coast. The long furrows and pits perplexed researchers at first, but the similarity to seafloor features in the modern Arctic and Antarctic soon became apparent.

Hill said additional surveys may reveal more scours in Florida and help pin down their age.

"The more mapping we do, the more we can learn about the seafloor," she said. "We didn't initially set out to find iceberg scours (in 2006)," Hill said. "This opens the door to a lot of new information about past climate patterns and past ocean circulation patterns."

Health service to cut 3,500 jobs next year under revised Croke Park plan

The Irish Times - Saturday, December 8, 2012

MARTIN WALL, Industry Correspondent, RONAN McGREEVY and MARY MINIHAN

About 3,500 posts in the health service are to go next year, a new Department of Health report has confirmed.

In its new plan for the implementation of the Croke Park agreement, the Department of Health says the Government is expected to set new targets to bring the number of staff in the health service down to 95,500 by the end of 2014.

?This will require a net reduction of at least 3,200 whole-time equivalent posts in 2013,? the report says.

The report warns that this figure does not include positions which were approved and funded but were unfilled at present. If it was decided not to fill them then the overall figure could rise to 3,800. The report was published on the Department?s website.

The health budget faces cuts of almost ?800 million next year as the Government continues to grapple with the public finances. Earlier this month the Department of Health got a supplementary estimate of ?360 million, despite repeated Government promises that no additional funding would be provided to offset its cost overrun.

Unions are expected to express deep concern about the implications of the latest proposed staff cuts on services.

These reductions are in addition to almost 5,000 personnel who left the health service in the run-up to pension changes last February. Health service unions say it has put huge pressure on existing services.

The report says that the challenges facing the health service ?require stakeholders to consider all options and co-operate with voluntary redundancy programmes and other measures to accelerate reductions in staff numbers...?

It is unclear what is meant by ?other measures.?

Career-break scheme?

Some highly placed sources suggested that the Department of Health and the Health Service Executive were also considering a new incentivised career-break scheme aimed at about 700 staff.

In October, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin suggested a new voluntary redundancy scheme could be established for surplus administrative staff in the HSE.

Meanwhile senior Government figures firmly ruled out reversing budgetary measures yesterday, with Taoiseach Enda Kenny and T?naiste Eamon Gilmore insisting there could be no row-back.

Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton indicated there would be no alteration to the ?10 child benefit cut when she met a group of Labour backbenchers who were pressing for change yesterday.

Coalition TDs have returned to their constituencies to face anger about cuts in the respite care grant, the PRSI increase and the property tax. Labour deputies in particular will come under pressure in the D?il next week when the Social Welfare Bill is debated.

Sinn F?in will table a vote of no confidence in the Coalition next week, while Fianna F?il focused on the 20 per cent cut in the respite care grant.

Strong criticism?

The Government has also been strongly criticised by Siptu general secretary Jack O?Connor and Barnardos chief executive Fergus Finlay. Mr O?Connor wrote to the Taoiseach directly urging him to intervene to bring forward the budget measures curtailing pension tax relief for top earners .

Tim Cook: Why I Fired Scott Forstall - Business Insider

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

?

Tim Cook says Scott Forstall and John Browett are no longer at Apple because he wanted to increase the company's collaboration.

Forstall created iOS, the mobile software that runs iPads and iPhones. He was one of the most important people at Apple. Browett was a new hire, running the retail operations.

In an interview with Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Cook explains why they were forced out of the company by saying it was due to "my deep belief that collaboration is essential for innovation."

Cook clarifies a bit more by saying:

You look at what we are great at. There are many things. But the one thing we do, which I think no one else does, is integrate hardware, software, and services in such a way that most consumers begin to not differentiate anymore.

So how do we keep doing that and keep taking it to an even higher level? You have to be an A-plus at collaboration.

He then talks about Jony Ive leading the look of the hardware as well as the look of the software. And Craig Federighi leading the OSX and iOS teams, which need to work seamlessly. And then Bob Mansfield taking over wireless and silicon technologies, which are growing at Apple.

Sounds sort of blah, as an answer, but then answering a question about Jony Ive, Cook reveals something a bit more specific, saying:

But the thing that ties us all is we?re brought together by values. We want to do the right thing. We want to be honest and straightforward. We admit when we?re wrong and have the courage to change.

And there can?t be politics. I despise politics. There is no room for it in a company. My life is going to be way too short to deal with that. No bureaucracy. We want this fast-moving, agile company where there are no politics, no agendas.

Let's break that into pieces.

Forstall reportedly refused to sign an apology for Apple Maps. Cook wants people to admit when they're wrong and have the courage to change. Refusing to sign an apology means you can't admit when you're wrong.

Then there's the "I despise politics" bit. Forstall was also a reportedly political manager, taking credit for other people's work, pushing people aside.

So, add it all up and you get a decent picture about why Forstall was out. He wouldn't collaborate with other people at the company, he was political, and he couldn't admit when he was wrong.

Starbucks tax avoidance has Brits frothing mad

Angry over the negligible corporate taxes that Starbucks and other corporations have paid to Britain despite huge revenues, a protest group is threatening to occupy Starbucks shops on Saturday.

By Ian Evans,?Correspondent / December 7, 2012

Patrons sit in a Starbucks Coffee shop in central London Monday. Protesters, angry about multinational companies like Starbucks that make substantial sales but pay little tax in Britain, are set to occupy Starbucks shops across the country on Saturday to make their unhappiness known.

As the US considers higher tax rates for the wealthy to deal with a budget crunch, a similar debate is going on across the pond. But in the UK, it's not the individually wealthy who are being eyed: It's those multinational corporations who, despite turning over hundreds of millions of pounds in revenue, routinely pay little to no tax on their local profits.

Protesters against corporate tax-dodging are set to occupy Starbucks coffee shops across the UK tomorrow, just days after the company and other multinationals like Google and Amazon were heavily criticized by an influential Parliamentary committee.

Starbucks has about 720 shops in the UK that last year generated sales of ?400 million ($640 million). But in 2011 the company didn't pay a dime in UK corporate tax, despite saying in its 2011 annual report that "in particular, our Canada, Japan, UK, and China (business units) account for a significant portion of the net revenue and earnings of our international operations."

In fact, the company only paid corporate tax once in the past 15 years. though Starbucks argues the company paid ?160 million ($256 million) over the last three years in other business and employee-related taxes.

Members of the direct action group UK Uncut said they plan to turn outlets into day cares and women?s shelters to highlight the company?s low tax bill, despite a company pledge yesterday to pay more.

?Until Saturday we won?t know how many shops our supporters will target," Uncut spokesman Tim Street says, "but we?re confident that it will make an impact. We have been campaigning against tax avoidance for the last two years since the Government?s comprehensive spending review. There is widespread public anger against corporate tax dodging which has become systematic and endemic," he says. ?The country is really suffering under the austerity cuts, so to see big companies not paying their fair share adds to people?s anger. There?s no money yet, and hollow promises on press releases don?t fund women?s refuges or child benefits.?

Earlier this week, Parliament's Public Accounts Committee criticized global firms such as Starbucks, Google, and Amazon for paying little to no corporate tax in the UK despite turning over hundreds of millions of pounds in revenue. All deny aggressive tax avoidance.

Committee members said the corporations' practice of being based in lower-taxed countries, thereby preventing their profits from being taxed additionally in the UK, was an "insult" to British business.

Repeating her call to "name and shame" companies, committee chairwoman Margaret Hodge told the BBC that ?the inescapable conclusion is that multinationals are using structures and exploiting current tax legislation to move offshore profits that are clearly generated from economic activity in the UK. HMRC [Her Majesty?s Revenue and Customs, the British government's tax department,] should be challenging this, but its response so far to these big businesses and their aggressive tax planning has lacked determination and looks way too lenient.?

She had previously supported a boycott of Starbucks.

George Osborne, the British chancellor of the exchequer (equivalent to the US secretary of the treasury), responded by giving HMRC an extra ?154 million over the next two years to crack down on tax avoidance.

Starbucks didn't return calls for comment to the Monitor about the protests or the MPs? criticism, but Thursday the company said it would now pay an extra ?20 million ($32 million) over the next two years. In a statement the managing director of Starbucks' British arm, Kris Engskov, said: ?Today, we?re taking action to pay corporation tax in the United Kingdom - above what is currently required by tax law. We know we are not perfect. But we have listened over the past few months and are committed to the UK for the long term. We hope that over time, through our actions and our contribution, you will give us an opportunity to build on your trust and custom.?

Becky Jarvis, campaigns manager at the one-million strong online pressure group 38 Degrees, said companies had underestimated public opinion. ?We have been campaigning on this for the last couple of years, but it seems it?s only now the government has been prepared to listen," she says. ?This is something they need to deal with now especially as the chancellor of exchequer announces a new round of cuts in his autumn statement. We will be looking at answers through research next year by tax experts and we think there are ways round international law.?

Huge Christmas Sausage Roast - Mouthwatering Vegan Recipes?

The season of goodwill to all men (or should I reword that to say ?all sentient beings that includes some people . . .?) is around the corner, and we haven?t been sleeping in the MWV kitchen.? Far from it ? we?ve been working like beavers round the clock to produce a magnificent menu in readiness for the menu-planning panic that everyone suffers around this time !

So, here?s a sumptuous feast ? a HUGE sausage roast, that combines all the traditional elements, and my take on the famous trimmings ? veggies with an exotic twist, as you might expect.? This will be great for the non-vegan visitors or family members, and can be served with a vegan gravy.? All best wishes and good tidings for a memorable Vegan Xmas Table !!

I serve this with my ?Exotic Xmas Veggies & Trimmings??(http://mouthwateringvegan.com/2012/12/06/exotic-xmas-veggies-trimmings/), and my ?Golden Cheddar?d Potatoes? (http://mouthwateringvegan.com/2012/11/13/golden-cheddar?d-potatoes/)

Serves 4 to 6 portions.

INGREDIENTS

1 large white onion, very finely chopped and set aside

2 garlic cloves, finely chopped

the zest of a lemon

2 cups of vegan mince meat (ground meat substitute) ? I use Linda McCartney?s mince

6 vegan sausages ? again, I use Linda McCartney?s Sausages (pre-thaw for 40 minutes or so)*

1 tsp dried rosemary or 1 Tbsp freshly chopped rosemary

? tsp dried sage or 1 tsp fresh sage, finely chopped

? tsp nutmeg

? tsp curry powder

1 Tbsp HP brown sauce (or equivalent brown sauce)

1 Tbsp fresh flat leaf parsley, finely chopped

2 slices brown bread ? first process into breadcrumbs

1 cup (8 oz) firm silken tofu

salt to taste

? tsp vegetable granules, or vegetable stock powder

NOTE : Options for vegan sausages and ground meat substitues in the US include :

Lightlife (http://www.lightlife.com/Vegan-Food-Vegetarian-Diet)

Yves Veggie (http://www.yvesveggie.com/products/ground-rounds.php)

FOR SAUSAGE COATING

1 packet (640g) puff pastry ? I used JusRol, pre-thawed and set aside on a plate in the fridge

METHOD

  1. First process your onion in the food processor, and transfer into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Then process your bread in the processor, and add to the processed onion.
  3. Repeat the same step with the sausages, and add to the mix, together with the veggie mince.
  4. Next, process your tofu until smooth, before adding to the mix.
  5. Add in your herbs and all the remaining ingredients, and, with very clean hands, mash the mix, before forming it into a large ball.
  6. Then roll the ball into a large sausage, and, using cling film, wrap the sausage, as you would a Christmas cracker, before then doing the same, this time using foil.
  7. Steam the sausage for 15 to 20 minutes in a large saucepan.
  8. Now roll out your puff pastry into a large rectangle (approx. 12? x 6?), then place the sausage in the centre lengthways, and roll the pastry around it.
  9. Gently place it on a greased baking dish, pour a little oil of your choice around it, together with a few springs of rosemary, cover in foil and bake in the oven on a low 300?F (150?C) heat for 35 minutes.
  10. Now uncover, and bake until nice and golden.
  11. Remove from the oven, and serve with my Exotic Xmas Veggies & Trimming, and my ?Golden Cheddar?d Potatoes?.? Enjoy !!

GRAVY

Either make up a brown Bisto sauce to put on the cut sausage (use bisto, brown sugar, ? tsp veg granules), or else a tiny bit of Marmite (yeast extract), cornstarch (cornflour), oil and water.

Rand Paul blasts House GOP for 'purge'

(TalkingPointMemo) Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) criticized House Republican leadership on Thursday for ?purging? conservatives from various committee posts earlier this week.

?We had a couple of congressmen who stood up and said you know what the Paul Ryan budget doesn?t balance for 28 years, and so for voting against the Republican establishment they were purged,? Paul said on the Peter Schiff radio show.

Three views on whether states should require voter ID

Voter ID laws enacted recently in several states have taken center stage this election cycle, with proponents claiming they protect against against voter fraud and opponents calling them a political ploy that unfairly keeps poor and minority voters from the polls. Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson ruled Tuesday that the state could not implement its new voter ID law until after this year's November elections, effectively halting it for now.

As the fifth installment of our One Minute Debate series for election 2012, three writers give their brief take on whether US states should require voter ID. The "no" case is argued by Wendy Weiser of the Brennan Center for Justice. Jonathan Tobin, editor and blogger at Commentary magazine, argues the "yes" case. And Richard Hasen, professor at UC Irvine School of Law, suggests "a middle way."

1. Yes: States must preserve the integrity of each vote, especially in an era of close elections.

Assuring the integrity of the voting process is something that most citizens instinctively understand is the right thing to do. In the America of 2012, you need a picture ID to get on a plane, ride Amtrak, open a bank account, perform any transaction with most businesses and government, as well as buy alcohol or tobacco.

Why is voting less important? States must preserve the integrity of the ballot process, especially in an era of close elections. Given the potential for long, disputed outcomes (Florida in 2000 and several state elections since then), there is a need for zero tolerance in voting fraud. A recent Washington Post poll shows nearly three-quarters of Americans support requiring people to have photo IDs to vote. Since 2011, eight states have passed voter ID laws. Minnesotans vote on the issue in November.

Yet opponents of voter ID laws paint them as racist, meant to suppress the minorities as well as other groups that are supposedly unable to comply with these simple regulations. That?s a canard. There?s nothing racist about a procedure that can help prevent people who aren?t citizens or who aren?t legally registered from committing fraud. What is racist is the notion that African-American and Hispanic voters who don?t have an ID are incapable of getting one.

Acquiring a voter ID is not complicated. In states that have passed such laws, one may be obtained from the government free of charge, though costs such as for transportation are incurred.

As for liberal assertions that there is no voter fraud in the United States, most Americans respond with a snicker. To believe that the parties and their supporters don?t try to cheat requires us to ignore American political history ? as well as just about everything we know about human nature.

Voter ID laws are constitutional and make sense. Arguments to the contrary are partisan hot air.

Jonathan S. Tobin is senior online editor and chief political blogger of Commentary magazine. He can be reached via e-mail at jtobin@commentarymagazine.com. Follow him on Twitter at @TobinCommentary.

ALSO BY THIS WRITER: Voter ID laws are inherently reasonable, not racist or Republican

2. No: Restrictive laws that require photo ID are an attempt to manipulate the election.

Americans should be skeptical of the sweeping changes to state voting rules that will make it harder for many eligible citizens to vote.

According to research here at the Brennan Center for Justice, as many as 11 percent of voting-age American citizens do not have the kinds of government-issued photo IDs required by the highly restrictive voter ID laws passed since last year in Pennsylvania, Kansas, Tennessee, and elsewhere. That includes longtime voters who are seniors, veterans, and minorities.

These citizens face hurdles of access, time, and costs in obtaining such IDs. The timing of these laws, passed in a major election year, also makes them suspect. Indeed, Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson ruled Tuesday that the state could not implement its new voter ID law until after this year's November election, effectively halting it for now. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court had asked the lower court to review whether voters would be disenfranchised in the rush to implement the state?s new ID law.

OPINION: In Pennsylvania, the Rosa Parks of voter ID faces down GOP voter suppression

There is no way to get the new state-issued photo IDs into the hands of all eligible Americans covered by the new laws before the election, especially given the rickety condition of the ID-issuing operations in many states.

So why are politicians hastening to put in place these requirements? Could it be they don?t want certain Americans to vote? In Pennsylvania, House majority leader Mike Turzai bragged to his Republican colleagues that the state?s new voter ID law would ?allow Governor Romney to win the state.?

Restrictive voter ID laws like the one passed by Mr. Turzai and his colleagues help determine winners only by excluding legitimate voters who might not vote the way the politicians want.

That?s not right. Politicians should not be able to manipulate election rules for political gain.

Of course it is important to protect the integrity of elections and prevent voter fraud. But our country was founded on the principle that we are all created equal. Living up to that promise means we cannot stand for new rules that block large numbers of eligible Americans from voting.

Wendy Weiser is the director of the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law.

3. A middle way: National voter ID card would restore trust, reduce costs in a fair way.

America needs to move toward a more rational way of administering elections ? and beyond the stale debate in which Republicans complain about voter fraud and Democrats yell about voter suppression.

The primary kind of voter fraud that state ID laws could prevent ? impersonation voter fraud ? is rare and does not seem to have affected an election outcome in at least a generation. And Democrats exaggerate the number of people likely disenfranchised by state ID requirements.

This partisan fight over fraud versus suppression plays out not just among voters, but in the very way elections are run: Controversial rules like voter ID laws are enacted in most places on party-line votes in state legislatures. Further, state and county election rules are often administered by partisan elected officials (often without adequate training or resources). Partisanship and decentralization raise the risk of unfair and uneven treatment of voters.

We need a national solution. For federal elections, a nonpartisan US agency should register every eligible voter to vote and provide each one with a photographic identification card to be used for voting anywhere in the United States.

It would be up to the federal government to pay for the documentation, such as birth certificates, needed to verify identity. Voters would have the option to provide their thumbprint with the ID card, which could be used instead of the card at the polling place, or if the card is lost. When a person fills out a change of address card at the post office, voter registration would move automatically.

This solves a lot of problems: It minimizes voter registration fraud. It also eliminates the high costs for parties to register voters and for states and local government to maintain voter rolls and check for fraud. It prevents double voting across state lines. National registration and identification tackles fears of fraud and suppression in a fair, rational way.

Richard Hasen is a professor at the School of Law at the University of California, Irvine. He is the author of ?The Voting Wars: From Florida 2000 to the Next Election Meltdown.?

Apple changes Maps language on website

Apple has replaced the iOS 6 Maps marketing copy on Apple.com with something less filled with bravado, and more focused on a technical improvement. As noted by iDaily.de, gone is the original (emphasis mine.):

Designed by Apple from the ground up, Maps gives you turn-by-turn spoken directions, interactive 3D views, and the stunning Flyover feature.1 All of which may just make this app the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever.

And in its place, the copy now reads (emphasis mine.):

Designed by Apple from the ground up, Maps gives you turn-by-turn spoken directions, interactive 3D views, and the stunning Flyover feature.1 All in a beautiful vector-based interface that scales and zooms with ease.

This comes after Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, wrote an open letter on apple.com to apologize for the current status of iOS 6 Maps, and the creation of a new iOS 6 Maps alternatives section in the App Store.

Following our iOS 6 review, we took iOS 6 Maps out for a 6 hour drive and pitted it against the old Google-powered iOS 5 Maps app as well as maps.google.com to compare how they perform in the real world.

Apple is expected to invest heavily in rapidly improving iOS 6 Maps. Google is expected to release a stand-alone Google Maps app in the App Store.

Hubble portrays a dusty spiral galaxy

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has provided another outstanding image of a nearby galaxy -- NGC 4183, seen with a beautiful backdrop of distant galaxies and nearby stars. Located about 55 million light-years from the sun and spanning about eighty thousand light-years, NGC 4183 is a little smaller than the Milky Way. This galaxy, which belongs to the Ursa Major Group, lies in the northern constellation of Canes Venatici (The Hunting Dogs).

NGC 4183 is a spiral galaxy with a faint core and an open spiral structure. Unfortunately, this galaxy is viewed edge-on from Earth, and we cannot fully appreciate its spiral arms. But we can admire its galactic disk.

The disks of galaxies are mainly composed of gas, dust and stars. There is evidence of dust over the galactic plane, visible as dark intricate filaments that block the visible light from the core of the galaxy. In addition, recent studies suggest that this galaxy may have a bar structure. Galactic bars are thought to act as a mechanism that channels gas from the spiral arms to the center, enhancing star formation, which is typically more pronounced in the spiral arms than in the bulge of the galaxy.

British astronomer William Herschel first observed NGC 4183 on 14 January 1778.

This picture was created from visible and infrared images taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys. The field of view is approximately 3.4 arcminutes wide.

This image uses data identified by Luca Limatola in the Hubble's Hidden Treasures image processing competition.
