Cool, Calm and Chic at Chloe

One designer smartly extending the fashion vernacular is Clare Waight Keller, whose latest collection for the house of Chloe was a clever amalgam of British rock-n-roll energy and chic Paris cool.

Staged Monday afternoon, March 5, in the Espace Ephemere, a custom-built tent inside the Tuilleries Gardens, this fall 2012 collection had a stylish practicality that should make it a real commercial success and hip plausibility which will win it the right sort of movie star clients. There has been a huge wave of Chinese movie stars this season taking seats in the front row of major Paris shows. Their names mean little to the assembled Westerners, but their presence marks an important new chapter in fashion; and at no show have they looked better than at Chloe, beaming as they posed in the house's spring color block chiffon sheaths before camera snapping Asian bloggers.

The fall collection's stars, though, were the excellent outerwear, some seemingly turned inside out, and featuring unexpected ensembles of boucle and boiled wool, padded silk, bumpy lace and smooth cashmere. All of them looked great and ideal for all sorts of occasions, whether a country walk, art gallery opening or job interview. Waight Keller paired these with parachute silk blouses and lovingly cut jogger trousers and were flattering and obviously comfortable.

"It's about recalling the sort of clothes I'd wear in the wet summer weather at Glastonbury, before the huge crowds took over, and mixing it with the great sense of chic one comes to admire as a foreigner living in Paris," Waight Keller said, referring to the legendary annual U.K. rock festival.

Not everything worked. Fall's pucker hem, baggy leather culottes were a bit odd, and the footwear was an ounce too schoolmarmish. Yet, this was still a triumph for the British-born designer, who is clearly leaving her mark on Chloe, redefining the brand's feminine Parisian DNA with a smart dose of British aplomb.

Created in a great rural meets urban palette of russets and faded leaf mixed with washed out titanium and Prussian blue, the clothes granted the models an easy elan. This was a collection that hit just the right balance of jaunty poise and aloof cool.
